#9 Technorati

Searched 'Learning 2.0'. I can't think of anything to say about it. Blogs bore me stupid. I'd prefer to read a scholarly article about the directions of librarianship.

Just for fun, I searched for 'Cries and whispers', the blog of a friend and colleague. Found it. Laughed - again. That's good.

#8 Tagging

We use del.icio.us on SLV Chat. That's a good use. Better than other bookmark management systems we've tried. Unbundled tags are a pain though.

#7 Finding Feeds

Feedster was off line. Can't be bothered trying again. Would have liked to search podcasts, but won't go back to it; I'm trying to rush through these exercises to finish the program and get back to my other work.

I searched 'topix' for news about art. There was none; just Hollywood crap and sport.

But I get the picture about how it all works. I hate looking at other people's blogs, but I searched Google Blog anyway. Couldn't think of what to search, so I searched for mine. Couldn't find it.

#6 RSS and newsfeeds

"Feed me" intro was good to get the picture of what to do. Subscribed to 5 newsfeeds using Google reader (2 from my own institution - but I have other ways of finding out about our events). Can see that this helps manage webpages you like to visit regularly, but can't really see myself using this sort of technology - I want less email, not more. It'd be good if you were job hunting or needed to keep up with financial markets etc. Or if you had to keep up with antiquarian book sellers or art dealers - but I'don't. I wouldn't use this technology just to see people's blogs or to read book reviews. For the later, I actually like reading the paper with my feet up.

#5 wikis

I stole the key. I added my blog. I'm now a favorite. (Was that the point?)

OK. At week 6, I've just finished week 3. I'm having trouble finding time for this training.

#4 Wiki

Just had a hell of a time trying to find my blog. My user name had changed! How frustrating. Wanted to give it all up! What a trial.

Looked at SJCPL Subject guides. They're edited by staff on a wiki. Just sounds like a lot of work for staff; not clear why they're wikis.

Princeton Public Library. Saw it. Absorbed it.

Same for Library success, SLV Training wiki and AGLIN.

I see now what wikis are being used for in libraries. Good comunity-building tools, if you're clear on who your communities are. SLV is all things to all people, so not clear that we can use wikis in this way. Good tool for internal purposes, like manuals etc. There would be no point in reproducing book covers (expensive to digitising) and reader reviews - we're not a shop! (like Amazon). Abrstracts and contents lists would be great added to catalogue records, but that would not be a job for wikis.
